We have all heard the well-meaning reassurances from friends and family “Don’t worry, boys just talk and read later than girls,” or “Reading will click eventually!”. While it is true that children grow at their own pace, waiting passively for a child to outgrow it can cause them to miss receiving the specialised support early.
Reading development is not like a growth spurt where a child suddenly shoots up in height overnight. Instead, it is more like building a house. If the foundation such as connecting letters and sounds are not strong, promoting to the next grade in Kindergarten 2 or Primary 1 becomes more challenging for them.
At DAS Preschool, we encourage parents to look past the old myths. If your child is showing challenges to remember the letter-sounds or consistently faces challenges blending two- or three-letter words, it just means their brilliant brain is seeking a different way to learn. Getting specialised means giving them the right tools to build a strong foundation.
