Waiting For Your Preschooler to Get The “Click”?

As parents, we often hear the same advice: “Give it time. The child needs time to grow”
“They’ll catch up.”
“Just read more at home. He will make the click.”

We watch during storytime, hoping our child will suddenly move from looking at pictures to reading words. For some children, that moment comes naturally. For some bright children, it does not.

It is not because they are not trying, or even trying hard enough.

Reading is not just about recognising letters or memorising words. It involves multiple skills; retrieving letter sounds, holding sounds in memory, blending them in the right order, and connecting them to meaning. When one of these areas is weaker, reading does not “click” on its own.

This is where the shift needs to happen.

Instead of asking, “How long should we wait?”
We start asking, “What support does my child actually need?”

At the DAS Preschool, we do not see this as fixing a problem.
We see it as building a stronger foundation; early, intentionally, and effectively.

DAS offers free online preschool screenings for K1 and K2 children. These screenings help determine whether:

• Your child is meeting expected literacy milestones
• There may be early learning gaps
• Your child could benefit from the DAS Preschool Programme
