Speech and Drama Arts Spotlight – Raphael Lim and Mikhael Lim

Raphael and Mikhael are brothers who are both enrolled in DAS’s Speech and Drama Arts (SDA) programme. Raphael is 12 and currently in Primary 6, while Mikhael is 9 and in Primary 3. Mikhael is also a student that learns differently, without a formal diagnosis of dyslexia.

The Quiet Boy Raphael

Since Raphael entered primary school, his mother, Ms Marilyn, noticed that he was a quiet boy who preferred listening over speaking. He would shy away from participating in group discussions and stayed silent even when he faced bullying. Over time, she came to understand that his reserved nature actually stemmed from nervousness and a lack of confidence.

Raphael Breaks Out of His Shell

When Ms Marilyn found out about DAS’s SDA programme, she did not hesitate to enrol Raphael. The transformation that followed was nothing short of remarkable. Her timid little child began to blossom into a confident, articulate young boy. Raphael is now much more self-assured and composed, whether at home or in school. He is also a Peer Support Leader at his primary school, an achievement that his mother is proud of.

During DAS Talent Showcase: Gift of Wonders in 2023, Raphael pleasantly surprised his mother when he delivered his performance as an elf with such ease and joy. She asked him afterwards if he had stage fright and he said no with a big smile across his face. That was a proud mommy moment for Ms Marilyn!

Igniting Mikhael’s Spark

Encouraged by Raphael’s growth, his younger brother, Mikhael, was also enrolled into the SDA programme. Mikhael had never been enthusiastic about enrichment classes, yet when it comes to SDA lessons, he will wake up early, get ready without a fuss, and walk into class with excitement. This reassures Ms Marilyn because she knows her sons are in great hands and are well-liked by their teacher and peers. She is excited to witness Mikhael’s growth through his upcoming performance in the next Gift of Wonders this year.

Thriving Together

Ms Marilyn extends her heartfelt gratitude to Ms Muzdalifah, who has played a pivotal role in both boys’ journeys. Her guidance has made a lasting impact that goes far beyond the classroom and stage. With her unwavering support, patience, and belief in their potential, Ms Muzdalifah has helped them grow not just as performers, but as confident, expressive individuals.
