Sweat glistened on their foreheads as the students adjusted their costumes, hearts racing with anticipation. As the lights came on and the music filled the room, it was finally showtime!
On 19 and 25 May 2024, the Speech and Drama Arts (SDA) team proudly hosted three vibrant showcases at the Bishan Learning Centre. These performances marked the culmination of the students’ hard work throughout the term, bringing together parents, siblings, and family members to witness and celebrate their incredible progress.
The event was made even more special thanks to dedicated volunteers who supported rehearsals, led warm-up activities, and worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Their contributions helped create an unforgettable and smooth-running experience for all.
The Term 2 showcases were so much more than just performances. They were a heartfelt celebration of the students’ resilience, determination, and incredible personal growth. For many of these young performers, it was their first time speaking lines on stage, and the experience of performing before a warm, supportive audience gave them the courage to overcome their fears and shine with newfound confidence.
The SDA team is devoted to using speech and drama as a life-changing journey, nurturing not only students’ talents but also vital skills like self-belief, communication, and teamwork.
Proud family members beamed with joy, cheering on their children’s achievements and surrounding them with hugs, kisses, and words of love. The room overflowed with pride, happiness, and unforgettable moments, leaving everyone with hearts full and eager for the next chapter of this inspiring journey.
Creative Drama Class
The talented students in the CD program, aged 6 to 8, delighted the audience with a charming performance of “The Grasshopper and the Ants.” This heartwarming children’s play told the timeless tale of a carefree grasshopper seeking help from hardworking ants as winter approached.

The young performers enthusiastically embraced their roles as the narrator, the grasshopper, the bumblebee, and the ants. Despite their young age, they rose to the challenge of memorising lines and coordinating stage movements with impressive poise and confidence.
The CD program continues to nurture creativity, teamwork, and communication skills through engaging performances like this, helping children build confidence and develop essential life skills from an early age. Families and audience members were left beaming with pride, celebrating the students’ hard work and achievements on stage.
Literacy Through Drama Class
The students from the LTD programme, aged 9 to 12, took the stage with a delightful performance of “Peter Rabbit,” a lively adaptation of Beatrix Potter’s beloved classic The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The Speech and Drama Arts (SDA) team skillfully transformed the story into an engaging script that brought the characters to life.
The play followed the adventures of the mischievous and disobedient Peter Rabbit as he was chased through Mr McGregor’s garden. SDA students eagerly embraced their roles as Peter Rabbit, the other rabbits, Farmer McGregor, and the Scarecrow. The audience was swept up in the energy as the rabbits darted across the stage, cleverly evading Mr. McGregor while delivering their lines with charm, enthusiasm, and confidence.
The performance showcased not only the students’ acting talents but also their growth in teamwork, communication, and self-confidence — core goals of the SDA programme. Families and audience members were left thoroughly impressed, celebrating the students’ hard work and stage presence.

Educational Drama Class
The students from the ED programme, aged 12 to 15, captivated the audience with their powerful performance of “I Wish for a Better Tomorrow.” Adapted from DM Larson’s work and inspired by the urgent theme of climate change, the play featured meaningful roles such as Polar Bears, Mother Earth, and a symbolic Wolf.
This performance went beyond acting, it delivered a compelling message about environmental awareness and the consequences of inaction. Through their heartfelt portrayals, the young actors encouraged the audience to reflect on pressing global issues and the importance of protecting our planet’s future.
The ED programme continues to empower students with opportunities to build confidence, communication skills, and social awareness through meaningful theatre. The audience was deeply moved, applauding the students’ creativity, passion, and commitment to raising awareness for a better tomorrow.

The SDA team recognises speech and drama as a powerful tool for developing students’ talents and boosting their self-confidence, ultimately helping to nurture a more positive self-concept. Class showcases and performances at external venues serve as invaluable learning experiences, providing SDA students with opportunities to grow, express themselves, and shine on stage.
