How Early Support Helped Timmy Grow in Confidence

Timmy* is a sweet and thoughtful boy who would often pick up a flower along his walk to school and present it to his teacher at DAS. He would also lovingly say, “I love you” at the end of each class.

When Timmy joined the DAS Preschool Programme in Kindergarten One, he was unable to name most letters and experienced difficulty forming letter strokes on lined paper. On his first day, he cried and refused to let his mum leave, as he was wary of the new environment. However, after story time and a playdough activity, he gradually settled and was able to let his mum leave the classroom.

Lessons were conducted in a fun, engaging, and multi-sensory manner to support his learning. Timmy showed a willingness to improve, consistently applying what his teacher had taught him in both letter formation and blending sounds to read words. His parents have been very supportive, regularly reinforcing concepts taught in class at home.

In Kindergarten Two, Timmy demonstrated significant improvement in his letter formation and was able to copy sentences from the board, ensuring that his letters were aligned on the writing lines and that appropriate spacing was maintained between words. He also progressed from letter naming to associating sounds with letters and began attempting to read and spell simple three-letter words. In addition, he started Speech and Language Therapy at DAS to support his articulation and speech.

Early intervention has supported Timmy ’s growth in both confidence and literacy skills. He is now beginning the Main Literacy Programme for primary school students at DAS. From a little boy who once held tightly to his mum in an unfamiliar classroom, Timmy has grown into a confident learner who approaches new challenges with courage, curiosity, and a love for learning.
