INTRO TO THE PREP 2 PSLE PROGRAMME

The PREP 2 PSLE programme started in 2013 to support primary school students with dyslexia overcome their difficulties in acquiring English Language skills beyond basic literacy skills like reading and spelling. The programme, formerly known as English Exam Skills, was renamed Preparation for English Paper 2 PSLE (PREP 2 PSLE in short) to better reflect its main goals and objective which is to gear students up for the English PSLE.

PREP 2 PSLE was founded by a team of passionate educational therapists (EdTs) who shared a common goal in unlocking the potential of students especially with the academic challenges they face in school. The main objective of PREP 2 PSLE is to support and equip students with practical and relevant strategies which they can apply independently to help them overcome the difficulties they face in various components of the English paper.

ROLE OF A PREP 2 PSLE EDUCATIONAL THERAPIST

PREP 2 PSLE goes beyond the traditional approach of memorisation and recitation to teach English language skills. Our learners are diagnosed with dyslexia and may have other co-occurring learning needs, therefore our programme integrates teaching approaches that will help our students learn and acquire skills effectively. For instance, EdTs are trained to use multisensory ways to introduce and teach a new concept to students so that it caters to the learning styles of all students, improves their memory and reinforces their understanding.

Every hour of a PREP 2 PSLE lesson is structured to include a review and an introduction of concepts, explicit explanation and guidance to show students how a concept can be applied to actual exam-type questions and opportunities for them to apply the skills independently. PREP 2 PSLE classes are kept small, 1 EdT to 4-5 students, so that EdTs are able to provide direct and meaningful feedback on students’ errors and closely monitor the progress of individual students.
