Nurturing Confidence in a Shy Child: Medina’s Story

From Silence to Concern

When Medina was in kindergarten, her extreme shyness affected not only her social interactions but also her school attendance. She often asked to stay home to avoid socialising with other children. Medina was not verbally communicative, which led her mother, Mdm Sharifah, to suspect that she might have selective mutism. Concerned that this avoidant behaviour would persist into primary school and impact her learning, Mdm Sharifah knew she had to act early.

Upon hearing about the DAS Speech and Drama Arts (SDA) programme, Mdm Sharifah signed Medina up for a trial class. She wanted to find support for Medina that would help her become more expressive, build self-confidence, and connect with other children with similar learning differences in a safe, nurturing environment.

A Hopeful First Step

After the trial class, Medina joyfully described the fun she had, especially during a game involving expressive body movements and facial expressions guided by the teacher. The warm, welcoming attitude of her teacher and older classmates helped her feel at ease and gave her the confidence to engage fully in the class. Since she started SDA classes, Medina has transformed into a cheerful and enthusiastic girl. She is always eager to share stories about her class activities, takes pride in practising her lines and often dances diligently at home.

From One Parent to Another

As a parent of a child with dyslexia, Mdm Sharifah encourages other parents to provide their children with creative outlets to improve their self-esteem and communication skills. She shares that this is essential for them to break out of their shell and pushes them to explore their potential. As she has witnessed first-hand how Medina’s confidence has grown, she feels that parental support is the strongest pillar a child can lean on.

A Newfound Confidence

From a little girl once thought to be selectively mute, Medina now looks forward to every drama session with joy. Her educational therapist, Muzdalifah, has been a guiding light throughout her journey. Inspired by her, Medina dreams of not only becoming an actress but also a teacher one day.

In the upcoming Gift of Wonders, Medina will be performing as one of the fairies in the drama play “The Secret”. Though she admits to feeling so nervous that her heart is pounding, she is also excited to perform, especially with her new friends by her side.

Medina’s growth and dedication to her craft at a young age is admirable, don’t miss her spectacular performance at the talent showcase, get your tickets for Gift of Wonders here now!
