Nurturing Courage and Growth Through Self-Expression
Stepping into the role of Programme Manager for the Speech and Drama Arts (SDA) programme has been one of the most humbling and transformative journeys of my professional life. I came into this role with a deep belief in the power of drama to shape lives, but I never expected just how much it would shape mine.
Professionally, leading the SDA programme has taught me the art of balancing structure with creativity. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside passionate educators, dedicated parents, and resilient learners, each with their own story, their own voice. Together, we’ve built a curriculum that not only develops drama skills, but also nurtures the confidence, communication, and self-expression of students with dyslexia and other specific learning differences. It’s a reminder that true learning goes beyond the script or stage, it happens in those quiet moments of growth, risk-taking, and discovery.
On a personal level, this journey has made me more patient, empathetic, and grateful. I’ve witnessed students who once whispered their lines now take the stage with pride. I’ve seen tears of frustration transform into beaming smiles after a successful showcase. Each of these moments has deepened my belief that every child has something valuable to say, and it is our role as educators to create a space safe enough for them to say it.
Empowering My Students and Myself
The most fulfilling part of this role is watching our students thrive, not just as performers, but as individuals. It’s in the way they comfort a nervous peer, cheer each other on backstage, or reflect on how drama has helped them speak up in class. These are the wins that don’t always get applause, but they are the ones that stay with you.
If I had to choose my proudest moment as the SDA Programme Manager, I would say: It’s hard to choose just one. There have been so many meaningful ones, but one that stands out was during the very first DAS Student Talent Showcase: Gift of Wonders in 2023. After the show, a parent texted me: “It was really an eye-opener last night. I saw how her eyes sparkled, and it meant a lot to me.” That single message spoke volumes. It reminded me that beyond the performance, what truly matters is the joy, pride, and transformation our students experience, as well as the deep emotional impact it has on their parents, who witness their child shine in ways they may have never seen before.
This role has given me more than I could have imagined. It’s not just about managing a programme, it’s about honouring each child’s journey, celebrating their courage, and believing in their boundless potential. And for that, I am deeply thankful.
