LOOKING BACK ON THE TRANSITION TO PRIMARY SCHOOL

Looking Back on the Transition to Primary School

The first few months of Primary 1 have flown by—and for many families, this period has brought big changes, new routines, and a lot of learning (for both children and parents!). As we settle into the school year, it’s a good time to pause and reflect:

How did your child adjust to the transition from kindergarten to primary school?

Did they ease in with confidence? Or are there still areas where they’re finding their footing?

Understanding how your child managed this transition can help you better support them in the months ahead. While we often focus on academic readiness, true school readiness includes a broader range of skills—social, emotional, and practical—that help children thrive in a structured school environment.

A child who is “school ready” can:

  • Adapt to routines and new schedules
  • Listen, concentrate, and follow instructions
  • Form positive relationships with peers and teachers
  • Express their feelings and needs effectively
  • Show independence (e.g., packing their bag or buying food at recess)

Every child develops these skills at their own pace. Some may take longer to adjust.

How can parents continue to support school readiness?

Even after the school year starts, there’s plenty parents can do to reinforce school readiness:

  • Keep routines consistent at home—meals, bedtime, and schoolwork
  • Talk about your child’s day—listen for both wins and worries
  • Support independence through small responsibilities
  • Help them manage emotions by naming feelings and talking about solutions

Stay connected with teachers

Maintaining communication with your child’s teachers gives you insight into their progress and helps create a strong support system between home and school.
