Zaidah’s Fitness Journey

Physical activity is beneficial for your body. However, did you know exercise can also boost your mood, improve your sleep and assist you in coping with depression, stress, anxiety and more?

Doing exercises provides benefits that is beyond the physical, especially in the context of heightened discussions around mental health issues. It significantly aids anxiety, depression and stress reduction by triggering the release of mood-enhancing chemicals like endorphins and serotonin. Notably, it enhances cardiovascular health, acts as a distraction from negative thoughts and contributes to overall fitness improvement.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health refers to an individual’s psychological and emotional well-being which encompasses our daily functioning in the areas of cognitive, emotional and social. This includes the ability to manage stress, relate to others and make choices in life. Having a positive mental health will allow one to handle challenges at work and home, maintain fulfilling relationships and perform productively leading one to achieve a sense of balance and contentment.

How do you start your fitness journey?

Exercise need not be strenuous as leisure walks around the neighbourhood would suffice. First and foremost, you need to ask yourself whether you prefer to exercise indoor or outdoor. If you find the thought of starting to exercise very daunting, perhaps you may opt for a social support as a source of motivator whereby you could share your experience with others or even exercise together.

My fitness journey

When I first started to embark on my fitness journey, I combined gym workouts and cycling to achieve a holistic well-being. Working out in the gym enhances my strength and endurance level, while cycling fuels cardio fitness and outdoor exploration. This dynamic duo of cardio and strength training empowers me to attain physical excellence and embrace a vibrant and active lifestyle.

Cycling is a versatile and popular form of transportation, exercise and recreation. It offers not only an eco-friendly mode of getting around but also a host of physical, mental and environmental benefits. From leisurely rides through scenic landscapes to intense cycling competitions, this physical activity has woven itself into the fabric of modern lifestyles, promoting health, sustainability and adventure for me.

On the other hand, strength training involves performing exercises that target muscles to enhance power and endurance. Using weights, resistance bands or body weight, it promotes muscle growth, bone density and metabolism. An integral part of fitness routines, strength training contributes to functional strength and overall physical performance.

The Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS) organises a yearly event called the World Dyslexia Awareness Week (WDAW). During this week, employees as well as members of the public are able to raise funds for children with learning differences by participating in the Move for Dyslexia campaign. In this campaign, participants are able to walk, run and/or cycle.

I have been participating in this event since 2020. Participants can choose to walk for 30 km, run for 30 km or cycle clocking in their longest distance in a period of 30 days. This year a new group bundle discount will be introduced. Interested participants will have to pay $30 for the registration fee. A group registration consisting of 5 participants will cost $120 whereas staff of DAS will only need to pay $100 for 5 participants. I enthusiastically urge both DAS staff and members of the public to participate in any of the event segments that resonate with you. Your involvement in this event will also contribute positively by generating funds to support our students’ education.
