Speech & Drama Arts: Student Spotlight – Rizqah

Nur Rizqah Binte Mohamad Rasyid joined the Speech and Drama Arts (SDA) programme in September 2021. Then, she was seven years old. Despite enjoying drama activities, she was initially very shy. Rizqah has since grown in confidence after joining the program. This was only possible because of the strong support and guidance provided by her parents. Now, Rizqah is more comfortable with new students.

Although there are still moments her shyness overwhelms her, her attitude has changed. She makes it a point to try despite the discomfort she feels.

In drama class, Rizqah enjoys learning about new stories and characters. She takes her role as an actor seriously and tries her best to bring the characters to life. Even though she finds memorizing lines challenging, she perseveres.

In addition, Rizqah always encourages her classmates to behave well and show kindness to each other. We spoke to Rizqah in person, and she has kindly shared her experience of being with the SDA program with us.

Question What are some things you like about drama?
Rizqah I like doing the activities like mirror me and role-playing.
Question When you first started the SDA programme, what were some things you found hard to do?
Rizqah I found it hard to speak out. I also needed more time to think about ideas and was unable to express myself.
Question How did you overcome those challenges?
Rizqah I tried my best and said to myself “I can do it!”. I also participated more in class and communicated more with my teacher and friends.
Question Do you have any special memories about the SDA class?
Rizqah Yah, some of the games were so fun.
Question Which character was your most favorite to act?
Rizqah I liked being both Max’s mom and Owl, but I liked being Max’s mother more. I wish I could grow up faster and become an adult. It was fun being a grown up.
Question Did you learn anything from those characters while preparing for your role?
Rizqah I learnt not to give up so easily, only then can I achieve my dreams.
Question Other than drama, what are your other interests?
Rizqah I like singing, dancing and cycling. I mostly like singing and dancing. Whenever I am bored, I will sing in my heart. However, when I am at home I will sing very loudly until my parents can hear my voice. Sometimes I will dance by pretending to act as the characters in Ninja Kidz.
Question There are some students who want to join our drama class, but might have worries about their reading and writing skills. Could you give them some words of encouragement?
Rizqah Do not worry or be scared. Its ok, the class is fun. If you join our drama class, you will enjoy the mainstream school more. Why? Because you will be more confident like me.
