Learning to read is a complex process, and every child develops at a different pace. When a child struggles with early literacy skills, however, common misconceptions can make it difficult for parents to recognise when additional support may be needed. Understanding what is and is not a sign of a reading challenge can help parents respond to their child’s needs more effectively.
Let us take a closer look at three common myths about early reading challenges.
Myth 1: Children outgrow reading difficulties.
A widespread belief is that children will naturally outgrow reading struggles once they start primary school. In reality, without early specialised support, these reading gaps usually widen over time.
Myth 2: Writing letters backward means a child has dyslexia.
Writing mirror-image letters (confusing b and d) is a part of early childhood development. We also want to look at the child as a whole. Is the child demonstrating any other challenges besides letter reversals? Is the child able to blend and segment? Can the child recognise sight words? Reversals only become a concern if they persist past Primary One.
Myth 3: Boys face more reading challenges than girls.
Reading challenges affect both boys and girls. However, they often display differently in the classroom. Boys are more likely to express frustration through disruptive behavior during reading and writing tasks, while girls are often better at masking their challenges.
