If your 6-year-old or preschool child struggles to read, recognising letters or remembering letter sounds, it does not mean they are less intelligent. Instead, it may mean that they need more support.
Literacy difficulties are often related to how a child processes sounds, letters and words, not how smart they are. Many children who find reading difficult are strong problem-solvers, creative thinkers and quick learners in other areas.
Some children are natural out-of-the-box thinkers. They may build detailed LEGO structures without instructions, solve puzzles quickly, notice patterns others miss or show remarkable empathy and emotional awareness. These strengths remind us that reading challenges are only one part of a child’s learning journey.
Other children may shine through music, dance, drawing, painting, storytelling, hands-on activities or caring for those around them. These strengths can reveal creativity, confidence, perseverance and emotional intelligence. With encouragement and the right support, they can be discovered, nurtured and celebrated.
