As young learners are still at the start of their learning journey, they often make mistakes that parents tend to brush off, thinking that the challenges will be resolved over time. However, persistent challenges in reading or writing may indicate a need for early specialised support to prevent any further delays in improvement and learning progress.

Here are some common challenges among preschoolers:

• Trouble recalling letter sounds: Forgetting letter-sound even after repeated teaching 
• Difficulty with blending: faces challenges in joining sounds in words such as ‘s-u-n’, ‘b-a-t’
• Difficulty with segmenting: faces challenges to hear sounds in words in order such as /c/ /a/ /t/ 
• Difficulty with recognising sight words: Struggling to recognise common words such as ‘the’, ‘and’, ‘she’ despite multiple exposure 
• Difficulty with letter formation: Mixes upper and lower case letters during writing 

Catching these signs early allows children to bridge their literacy gaps before primary 1.
