When young children struggle with reading, parents often wonder if it is just a phase or a sign of something more. A common question is, “Should I wait for my child to catch up?” While children develop at different paces, reading skills are built upon layers upon layers. Waiting without developing a strong foundation can widen the learning gap.

Another frequent question is, “Does early struggle mean my child has dyslexia?”

Not necessarily. At the DAS, at this age, the child is too young to undergo a dyslexia assessment. A child can only undergo the DAS Dyslexia assessment after the child turns 6, and have at least 6 months of structured phonics support.

At the DAS Preschool Programme, our goal is to offer specialised early literacy support to any child who is showing challenges. We want to provide them with tools to succeed and develop the joy and confidence in learning.

Weng Yiyao is the Lead Educational Therapist and Preschool Programme Managaer at the Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS). With over a decade of experience, she specialises in supporting preschoolers with dyslexia through targeted literacy interventions.
