Keynote 1: Learning in Young Children: A Singaporean Pediatrician's Perspective


In this keynote address, A/Prof Lourdes Mary Daniel will review the holistic development of children that is critical for effective learning. This keynote presentation will also cover some key brain processes that are involved in this developmental journey. This will begin with a discussion of the range of learning challenges that young children can face, including established learning disabilities e.g. dyslexia, learning difficulties in children with a specific diagnosis, e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, as well as other behavioural and developmental problems that can affect learning, e.g. language delay, fine motor difficulties and socio-emotional difficulties. This will be followed by a review of the resources for assessment and intervention in Singapore, description of the pattern of children seeking help in the Child Development Program and an outline of the referral process in the public sector. The importance of early developmental screening and early intervention for children with developmental, learning and behavioural difficulties will then be highlighted. For children whose difficulties persist at the end of K2 and who are likely to have ongoing learning difficulties in primary school, she will offer strategies on how best to help with the transition process. The keynote will end by emphasising the key role that parents play in the learning journey of their child.

Keynote 2: Social Emotional Competence in Preschoolers


Social-emotional competence, or the ability to manage oneself, relate well to others and make sound decisions, is an important part of early development and has been found to predict academic success. This keynote presentation aims firstly to explain what we understand about the early development of social-emotional competence and how it can impact academic learning. Secondly, we will explore how social-emotional difficulties can manifest and the signs to look out for. Finally, strategies for how we can help young children build their confidence, self-esteem and social skills will be shared, along with avenues for external support.

 

Workshop 1: Playing with Sounds: Strategies for Developing Phonological Awareness for Better Reading Success


Phonological awareness is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate the units of sounds in speech. Research indicates that it is highly related to later success in reading. Phonological awareness can be developed and fine-tuned so that children better understand the relationship between letters and the sounds they represent.  Come and explore fun and multi-sensory ways to develop the phonological awareness of children. You will learn that playing with sounds is a sound way for children to grow in their sensitivity to the structure of spoken language.

Workshop 2: Nurturing Social Smarts in the Early Years


It has become increasingly recognised that social skills play an important role in children's overall emotional health and well-being. Hence, it is important to help children develop flexible thinking and social competencies, or social smarts, through the practice of self- awareness, social awareness, and social observation in different everyday, real-life contexts. This workshop will highlight the importance of nurturing social smarts in young children, and provide useful tips on how this can be facilitated in the context of children's day-to-day experiences. This workshop is a sequel to last year’s social skills workshop by our speech-language therapists, but will summarise concepts introduced in the previous workshop, so that participants will still get a holistic understanding of the workshop content.

Workshop 3: Building Comprehension Skills for Preschoolers


Comprehension is the ability to read, understand and process language. Comprehension skills allow children to pick up vocabulary, improve their memory and gain the ability to acquire more advanced literacy skills. Skills required for successful comprehension can be strengthened daily in fun and easy ways. The workshop will focus
on the different methods to build a variety of literal and evaluative comprehension skills that will allow the children we support to learn better. It will provide examples with resources on how to incorporate and to build comprehension skills into daily conversations, structured verbal communication, story-telling and reading activities based on different level of abilities.

Workshop 4: Behaviour IS a Form of Language


Children with emotional and behavioural issues tend to fall behind in all areas of development, especially in academic achievement. Often, managing these emotional and behavioural issues lead to unnecessary struggles and painful interactions with young children. This workshop uses case studies to demonstrate how young children use behaviours to verbalise their feelings. Participants are further shown how to guide children to manage their emotions and behaviours using Mindfulness, Executive Functions Skills and other evidence-based strategies. When children have better management of their emotions and behaviours, they are in a better state of mind to learn and cope with daily needs.
