Facing Early Hurdles
Kenny* joined our Preschool Programme in mid-July 2024 while attending Kindergarten 2. When he first arrived, he had some basic letter recognition skills and was beginning to explore letter formation and letter-sound correspondence.
However, he had not yet developed essential early literacy skills such as segmenting for spelling. He often confused uppercase and lowercase letters, and reading simple three-letter words like hop and mat was still a struggle. Despite these challenges, Kenny came in with a cheerful spirit and a genuine eagerness to learn.
Tailored Teaching Sparks Progress
To support Kenny’s learning journey, we created personalised goals that addressed his specific literacy needs. These goals focused on building phonological awareness, strengthening short vowel recognition, and developing his ability to blend sounds for reading and segment them for spelling.
As he received consistent support in a warm and encouraging environment, Kenny began to grow in both skill and confidence. He became more engaged in class, participated actively, and approached learning activities with growing excitement.
The Start Of A Brighter Path
Today, Kenny can read and spell three-letter words with confidence and is beginning to take on four-letter words as well. While he still faces occasional challenges such as vowel confusion and letter sequence errors, he now applies helpful strategies like finger-spelling to guide himself through the process. His increasing resilience and belief in himself have shaped him into a learner who not only works hard but also trusts in his own ability to succeed.
With a strong foundation in early literacy and a heart full of determination, Kenny’s journey is just beginning. His story is a powerful reminder that with timely preschool intervention and the right support, every child can overcome learning difficulties and discover the joy of reading and learning.
